DATA ORGANIZATION

At Align BI, one critical piece of the analytics stack we often are called on to build is a data warehouse.  We create a central repository of your data that is organized and optimized to support further analytics and presentation such as for use in an executive dashboard. A data warehouse typically integrates data from numerous different sources and then presents it in a way that simplifies analytical and decision-making processes for executives and other personnel throughout an entire enterprise. What Makes Up a Data Warehouse?

A data warehouse is more than just a server where data is stored. It is organized and architected to extract the most value from your data. This requires several main components that come together to build out your data warehouse:

  • Source System Pipelines. A good data warehouse build out starts with being able to connect and pull data from all of your most important source systems and automating the pull of that data – no more logging into various applications and then copying and pasting into excel!
  • Data Staging. We typically land the data into a data staging area, also known as a data lake. Just make you sure don’t stop here or you end up with a data swamp.
  • Architected Data Warehouse. Here the data is transformed and loaded into a set of tables or other data organization structures that are well organized and optimized for consumption by both internal and external customers.

Why Use a Data Warehouse?

Data warehouses are necessary to adequately utilize data across huge organizations. Many enterprises have large amounts of data that isn’t properly being weighed into decisions and operations because they have no way to easily access it, or don’t have tools that turn that data into easy-to-understand models that give personnel a clear picture of the narrative that the data is telling. Data warehouses save a considerable amount of time, provide better information to make decisions, make historical data more accessible, and help companies better monetize their data.

Methods of Data Warehousing
  • Top-down. The top-down method of data warehousing is accomplished by first building the data warehouse and then importing data from external systems, which are then ordered and created into data marts. The key here is that you build the warehouse before getting the data.
  • Bottom-up. The bottom-up method of data warehousing occurs when you first build the data marts and use those to construct your data warehouse. This is beneficial when each data mart is being used for a specific process within an enterprise.

At Align BI, the methods we use to build a data warehouse are uniquely tailored towards each client’s needs. Oftentimes, we use a hybrid approach that strives to attain the benefits of both data organization methods.

We have most often built data warehouses based on the Kimball or Data Vault methodologies, but have also used Inmon on occasion.
